Fugees - Killing Me Softly
A couple days ago my brother bought The Score, so I felt obligated to play this Fugees masterpiece on repeat all day and post my second favorite song from it. I already posted Wyclef’s cover of No Women, No Cry, which is my favorite song off the album and one of my overall favorite songs in general. Killing Me Softly is also a cover if you weren’t aware.
Lauryn Hill released two painfully average singles this year, with the most recent and better of the two being Consumerism. She wrote on her tumblr that she was required to release Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix) early given the “virtue of [her] impending legal deadline”, and it really fucking disheartened me that my least favorite song she’s ever made was her first single in over a decade. I guarantee she’ll be making better music in the future, but my faith in Ms. Hill successfully recapturing the unfiltered flawlessness that she achieved with Killing Me Softly isn’t nearly high as I’d want it to be. I just REALLY hope she quells my fears by making some modern classics. The shit-pop dominated music scene needs this more than ever.
My Song Rating: 10 out of 10
